Abstract

Narration has occupied since ancient times and is still an important place in Arab human life and formed a vital basis of various foundations. Sumer, I found in the ancient Sumerian votive tablets many symbols and signs that are related to Mythology with contemporary Iraqi ceramics, this research tends towards monitoring that strong relationship between votive tablets and contemporary Iraqi ceramics through comparative research between contemporary Iraqi artists, and accordingly the research will be in the first chapter Starting from the research problem and its importance, its objectives, the limits of the research and the definition of terminology, as was completed in the second chapter specialized in the theoretical framework, which consists of the following sections:

  • The concept of storytelling
  • Votive tablets… their nature and history
  • Votive tablets in contemporary Iraqi ceramics

The researcher reviewed previous studies in the field of ceramics and did not find it to the best of the researcher’s knowledge. In the third chapter, the research procedures that included the method used. The descriptive approach and the research community in the current study represent mural works of Iraqi potters who completed their work between two years (1996-), either. The research sample was represented by mural works of Iraqi potters (Nizar Al-Zubaidi, Aws Al-Bahrani), and there were (6) models, three murals for each potter, and the research tool was the observer.

As for the fourth chapter, it included the results of the research and conclusion, after which the researcher reviewed the most important results according to the objectives of the research, and they were the most important.

1- Through the analysis process conducted by the researcher, it becomes clear that there is a common factor between these works, which is the external formation, which is characterized by the size of the block, as it is similar in terms of external appearance, but differs in its content and idea.

2- The potter Nizar Al-Zubaidi gave an aesthetic dimension by using the material and using it in the artwork in a new style that tends to modernity, in addition to its beauty acquired by the vocabulary of plants intertwined with the heritage and Islamic vocabulary and the rest of the components of the artwork.

3- The potter Aws Al-Bahrani relied on the method of dividing the floor of the painting into a number of horizontal fields that are filled with symbols and writings so that they can be clearly understood.
