Abstract:

One of the most essential aspects in the development of ecologically friendly and green construction processes is sustainability. Sustainability regulations and standards must be observed, and architects, designers, and builders must be directed in order to create the groundwork for and work on sustainability concepts at all levels.They play an important role in creating the optimal social, cultural, and economic environment. At the same time, if we are unfamiliar with their administration and molding, these instruments might be viewed as the most significant impediment to sustainability and successful implementation. The project aims to investigate the role of academic-architectural institutions in Iraq-Baghdad (in particular) in dealing with sustainability, and to utilize this as a foundation for the creation of a valued urban legacy that preserves the specific local Baghdadicultural character. By investigating the extent to which students in the Department of Architecture at Baghdad universities (as a case study) are aware of the significance and value of urban history or local identity as a result of the city’s historical evolution, The urban heritage fabric, as the major inspiration for future characteristics, as well as its important role in spatial and planned organization towards sustainable cities.

The study’s findings revealed a critical need for academic and architectural institutions in Baghdad to expand and deepen their teaching of sustainability, as well as to offer students with knowledge and methods for moving from theory to practice. The findings also revealed students’ interest in, and pride in, urban heritage. Their aim is to stay up with the worldwide evolution of urban project sustainability in order to retain the local identity created by their forefathers via the historical growth of Baghdad.
