Abstract

Background: The main complication of COVID-19 is the development of severe impairment of respirator function leading to profound reduction in oxygen supply to peripheral tissues. The presence of anemia may worsen the disease because of the poor oxygen carrying capacity of blood in anemic patients; however, the association between COVID-19 and anemia is still not very obvious.

Aim of the study: The objective of the current study was to evaluate the clinical features of COVID-19 patients with anemia and to further analyze the association between anemia and COVID-19.

Patients and methods: The current case control study was carried out in Al-Diwaniyah Teaching Hospital, Al-Diwaniyah Province, Iraq. The study included 30 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 based on clinical features, radiology and polymerase chain reaction test with confirmed anemia (Hb <10 g/dl) who served as the study group and 30 patients with COVID-19, but without anemia (Hb > 10 g/dl). All enrolled patients were adults win an age of > 15 years. Those patients were randomly selected from the pool of patients visiting the medical ward during the period starting from June August 2021 through December 2021.

Results: There was no significant difference in mean age between study group and control group, 47.17 ±12.63 years versus 52.27 ±12.13 years, respectively (p = 0.116). There was no significant association between gender and anemia in COVID-19 patients (p = 0.459). There was also no significant difference in mean BMI between study group and control group (p = 0.524).  There was no significant difference in clinical features between study group and control group (p > 0.05). Oxygen saturation was significantly lower in study group in comparison with control group (p = 0.048).

Conclusion: anemic in patients with COVID-19 is associated with more severe disease, higher need for oxygen, less oxygen saturation and greater risk of mortality.
