ABSTRACT
Background : VSD is the most common cardiac malformation , The defect can be in any portion in the septum and of different size that play an important role in the clinical outcome of its spontaneous closure. Objective: To determine the time of spontaneous closure of isolated VSD during the first year of life.Patients and Methods: A retrospective study of 50 patients(27males,23females) age range between 1 day to 4 months (mean age 35.92±26.43 days) with isolated VSD and no other cardiac lesion was performed in whom the condition was observed during the period from 1st of June 2013 to 1st of June 2014 in the Pediatric Echocardiography Unit/ Babylon maternity and children teachinghospital. Results: A total of 50 infants (27 males and 23 females) (54% vs. 46%) were followed up for 12 months. The mean age at the time of diagnosis was(35.92±26.43) days (Range: 1 day- 4 months). Spontaneous closure occurred in 21(42%) of the 50 cases that were followed upfor12months.14 (63.6%) cases of small, 7 (30.4%) cases of moderate and none of the patients with large VSDs had spontaneous closure. Spontaneous closure was noted in 15 (41.7%) of 36 cases of perimembranous defects and in 6 (60 %) of 10 patients with muscular VSD.Conclusion: About two thirds of the small and one third of moderate size VSD had spontaneous closure by first year of age. muscular VSDs close spontaneously at a rate higher than perimembranous VSDs in 1st year.
