Abstract

“Context” is one of the most major aspects that scholars have been interested in, both in the past and in the present, because it is regarded as a central axis of semantics, a product of linguistics, and an accepted method in linguistic research. The goal of all linguistics, including language anthropology, is to arrive at meaning. The study set itself the task of answering the following questions: a) What is the most common use of phatic communion in the data under study? b) What are the differences and similarities between Arabic and English in using phatic communion? Data is taken from conversations comprising the phatic communion. Accordingly, the study aims at identifying the similarities and differences between Arabic and English in using Phatic communion in the novelsand identifying the most prevailingfunction in both texts. It is hypothesized that the characters in the novels exhibit a variety of commonly used communicative functions. The participants each have their own way of answering and involving themselves in the interaction .However ,Arabic phatic responses to greetings and farewell tend to be long and variable, unlike the case for example in English.Besides, the most prevailing function in English text is breaking the silence while in Arabic text is showing solidarity. The study is limited to contrasting Arabic and English for using phatic communion for expressing certain functions.
