Abstract
In this study, a geotechnical assessment was conducted for the clays of Dibisregion in Kirkuk governorate, northern Iraq, which are used in the manufacture of oven(Kilns),Five samples were collected from the study area for the purpose of conducting various geotechnical tests, represented by petrophysical and chemical tests, the results of the geotechnical evaluation through conducting a volumetric analysis of the samples taken from the study area showed that the samples consist of fine grains (silt, clay) in a very large proportion, in addition to a small percentage of sand, and thus classified as a type of silty clays,in another hand the results of the plasticity limits test (Atterberg limits) for the samples showed that the soil classification is fine (CL) according to the standard soil classification (U.S.C.S)[5],and regarding the plasticity tests the results showed low plasticity according to the plasticity chart having medium fluidity, and through the results of chemical tests that included (gypsum content, organic matter content, calcium carbonate percentage and pH value), it was found that the studied samples have gypsum content very low, with a low percentage of organic materials as well and thus does not affect the engineering properties, and is considered to have a very high content of calcium carbonate, and it is alkaline neutral.
