Abstract
The effect of (Allium cepa L) as a feed additive, was evaluated on the growth, immune status,some blood serum characteristics of broiler chicks for 35 days.A total number of 300,1-day-old broiler chicks (41.0±1.0) were allocated to five different treatments with 3 replicates each (60 chicks/treatment) consisting of: T1, basal diet without additives onion powder (control treatment); T2, basal diet + 0.1% onion powder); T3, basal diet + 0.3% onion powder; T4,basal diet + 0.5% onion powder;And T5,basal diet + 0.7% onion powder.An increase in the final body weight “FBW,” bodyweight gain “BWG,” and feed intake was observed(P < 0.05) at different onion powder levels. Also, the thymus and bursa percentages were increased in the onion powder treatments (P < 0.05).An increase was
observed in the phagocytic %, phagocytic index, and serum lysozyme activity in onion powder supplemented treatments, with the best outcome reported in T5: added 0.7% onion powder (P < 0.01),also IgM was increased in the birdsfed with onion powder addition diets (P < 0.01),while an decrease was observed in cholesterol,TG,uric acid,TP,Albumin in all birds fed with onion powder addition diets((P < 0.05).
