Abstract :
The study investigates the critical discourse analysis of conceptual metaphor (CM) in news discourse. It is attempted to provide answers to the following questions: What are the most dominant CMs that are utilized in the selected news discourse? And What are the ideologies behind using these CMs in the scrutiny data? Accordingly, it aims at: Finding out the most dominant CMs that are utilized in the selected news discourse, as well as revealing the ideologies behind using these CMs in the scrutiny data.
In line with the questions and aims, it is hypothsized that: War is a game and war is a fire are the most dominant CMs that are employed in the selected data. Additionally, there are many ideologies depending upon in the news to frame the al-Aqsa Flood Operation as a planning threat for Isreal, and show potintial biased towards Israel. For validating or refuting the hypothses of the study, the researcher adopts Charteris-Black’s (2004) critical metaphor analysis model to analyze the data, as well as selects eighteen news articles (6 per a newspaper) to be analyzed qualitatively by relaying on the adopted model and quantatively by depending on some statistical tools.
The finding and discussion section reveals on the following conclusions: the most recurring CM are War is a Game (84%), Violence is a Force (38%), Violence as Planning (38%) and War is a Fire (23%). The journalists suggest that the al-Aqsa Flood Operation has a high level of coordination and planning. They also frame Hamas as the aggressor and Israel as the victim.
