Abstract
Derivation in the Arabic language is considered one of the most significant linguistic phenomena that reveal the language’s capacity for generating meanings and expanding semantic fields. It is based on establishing relationships between words that lead to the construction of a coherent semantic network, one that transcends the limits of lexicographical usage toward broader pragmatic horizons. Early Arab linguists paid considerable attention to this phenomenon, examining its phonological and morphological foundations, as seen in the works of scholars such as Ibn Jinni and Ibn Faris. In modern studies, this perspective has further developed to become closely linked with the analysis of semantic and contextual structures within texts.
In this context, the poetry of Ka’b ibn Zuhayr emerges as a fertile field for the manifestation of derivational and semantic phenomena. This is due to its linguistic density, stylistic diversity, and its belonging to a transitional period that combines features of pre-Islamic poetry with aspects of Islamic expression. Accordingly, this study seeks to examine derivation in his poetic corpus through a generative-semantic approach, analyzing the relationships between roots and their permutations, and exploring their impact on the construction of poetic meaning.
The study aims to identify the extent to which derivation—particularly major derivation—appears in the poetic text, to determine its semantic functions, and to investigate its mechanisms in meaning production within context. It adopts a descriptive-analytical methodology based on the examination of textual evidence and its connection to both classical linguistic theories and modern linguistic studies. In doing so, the research attempts to offer a renewed reading of poetic texts in light of the interaction between linguistic structure and meaning.
