Abstract
Background: Infection with Streptococcus pneumoniae is a major cause of Respiratory Tract Infection, Respiratory Tract Infection is an important and common disease in all societies of developing and developed countries, where pneumonia is one of the most common infectious diseases worldwide .Which can be broadly divided into Lower Respiratory Tract Infections (LRTI) or Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI) depending on their location and which remain among the leading causes of mortality worldwide . The most important natural microorganisms in the upper respiratory tract are aerobic bacteria such as Staphylococcus spp and Streptococcus spp.
Methods and Findings: We have systematically reviewed published studies reporting nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal carriage of S. pneumoniae, and Staphylococcus aureus, in children and adults in low and lower-middle income countries. Studies reporting that the number of people with pneumonia increased gradually with age. The highest percentage was 30% of patients in the age group 41-50 years, while the lowest percentage was 17.5% in the age group 10.
Conclusions:: In low and lower-middle income countries, pneumococcal carriage is frequent, especially in in the age group 41-50 years, and the spectrum of serotypes is wide.
