Abstract

The political situation in Lebanon has been unstable since the declaration of independence due to the presence of a large number of sects in it. The 1958 uprising is an important event in the history of Lebanon and it fulfilled the desire of the Lebanese people to get rid of President Camille Chamoun and the Western powers loyal to him. Fouad Chehab came to the presidency and adopted a policy The Chehabi philosophy, in cooperation with the Afried Foundation, for the sake of internal and political stability and improving the economic situation in all regions of Lebanon, until the coup that occurred in 1961, but it did not change anything due to its failure at the beginning of its implementation, and it also did not find any consensus or acceptance from within Lebanon, which made strong support for the Chehabi rule from Before the Lebanese people, the initiative taken by Fouad Chehab was that he did not nominate himself in the new elections and did not request the renewal of his rule for a second term. Which made Charles Helou, the candidate for the Chehabist movement, win the elections with a large percentage in 1964. Charles Helou’s rule witnessed a deviation from the Chehabist movement and his inclination towards the Christian community at the expense of Muslims. Also, external events had an impact on the Lebanese interior, including the setback of 1967 and the Cairo Agreement. The year 1969 gave freedom to the guerrilla movement to carry out guerrilla operations against the Israeli forces from within Lebanon, which generated political disagreements at home. These events weakened the Chehabi movement, causing it to fail in the elections against Suleiman Franijeh in 1970.
