Abstract
This study aims to investigate the gap between secondary school exam results in Sana’a and students’ performance in university entrance exams, focusing on the phenomenon of a large number of top-ranking secondary students contrasted with a low university admission success rate. The study was conducted on a sample of 500 successful secondary school students using a questionnaire designed to explore the causes of this gap. The findings reveal flaws in the current assessment system, which heavily relies on rote memorization without fostering critical thinking and analytical skills. Additionally, there is a weakness in exam question design and a lack of effective feedback provided to students. The study is grounded in educational literature emphasizing the importance of formative assessment and diversifying evaluation tools to ensure validity and objectivity. Based on the results, the study recommends reviewing and developing secondary assessment mechanisms, focusing on integrating higher-order thinking skills, improving exam standards, and enhancing the role of feedback to better prepare students for higher education and achieve fairness in assessment.
