Abstract:

This study was conducted in the 2019/2020 agricultural season for the purpose of a comparative study of 64 varieties of bread wheat, and 28 varieties of durum wheat cultivated in Iraq in terms of the traits (coleoptile length, plumule length, and radicle length) for all varieties. The laboratory study was carried out, which are two simple experiments with one factor, the varieties, and by applying the completely random design (CRD) in the laboratory of seed testing and certification in Mosul. The study aims to derive the first evidence for the Iraqi varieties of bread wheat and durum wheat in terms of sowing depth associated with the length of the coleoptile, in addition to comparing the genetic variance between the two types of wheat independently.

  • In the laboratory culture experiment, the bread wheat varieties (Kalar 1, Adana 99, Baghdad 1, Al Ezz 66, Buhouth 4, Al-Rasheed, and Erbil 4) were distinguished by achieving the highest rate of coleoptile, length for their seedlings compared to the rest of the bread wheat varieties. The varieties (Bohouth 158, Bengal, Al-Madaen, Al-Baraka, and Babel 113) achieved the highest average length of the plumule, while the varieties (Dijla Al-Khair, Maarouf, Bengal) achieved the highest rate of radicle length compared to the rest of the bread wheat varieties.
  • In the laboratory culture experiment, the durum wheat varieties (Erbil, Koyakan, Zevico, Sham 5, Semeto, Fada 98, and Um Rabie) were distinguished by achieving the highest average coleoptile length compared to the rest of the durum wheat varieties. The varieties (Fada 98, Parasiful, Zevico, Bakrajo 1, Erbil 3, Sham 5, and Miki3) achieved the highest rate of plumule length, while the varieties (Zevico, Furat 93, Iraq 7, Miki3, Sevevo, Erbil3) achieved the highest rate of radicle length compared to the rest of the durum wheat varieties.

Key words: Bread Wheat, Durum Wheat, Coleoptile, Plumule length, radicle length.
