Abstract
can be said that French-Saudi relations before 1932 did not actually exist due to the weakness of the French presence in the Arabian Peninsula, given that Britain was in control of that region. Also, French-Saudi relations actually began through the exchange of ambassadors and the establishment of embassies in both countries in the year 1939, which is considered the launch year for relations between the two sides.
However, these diplomatic relations did not witness significant development until 1967, which was the actual beginning of relations between Riyadh and Paris. This study came to show the nature of French-Saudi relations since 1964, which is the year in which King Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud assumed power in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, as The study reviews the circumstances of the beginnings of bilateral political, economic and military relations between the two countries and the role of the political orientations of French President de Gaulle and King Faisal, as well as their common ambitions related to exiting American hegemony, as King Faisal often found in Paris a political outlet when Riyadh’s relationship with Washington became tense in light of French political orientations. It is close to the trends of the Arabs, especially with regard to the Palestinian issue and the presentation of the Arab policy to France, which was a factor of rapprochement between the two countries, in addition to the charming personality of President de Gaulle among the Arabs in general and the Saudis in particular, which positively influenced the Saudi leadership’s desire for rapprochement with Paris.
